Course Design

Course Design

One of the activities I really enjoy when I am not competing is the design of golf courses. As Tour Professionals, we play many golf courses around the world every year, with differing landscapes, altitudes, natural and man-made hazards, grasses and climates.  With this experience I believe it gives me a greater understanding of what makes a really good golf course design.

I believe a golf course should be a challenge to play, both for amateur and professional golfers, but at the same time it should be an enjoyable experience, creating a sense of achievement following a great round of golf.

I have worked on a number of different projects to date. Some require a total design beginning with the site allocation to establish the suitability of the land for the purpose, creating initial design plans, consultation on construction methods and all materials, overseeing the construction at various intervals throughout the build to the final opening of the course. In other instances, an existing golf course may require just a few holes to be changed and enhanced in various ways, perhaps to make them more challenging or aesthetically pleasing.

Here are some of the golf course designs I have carried out.

PROSPER GOLF RESORT

Celadna, Ostrava
Czech Republic

My first complete design was 18 holes at Prosper Golf Resort, located near Ostrava in the Czech Republic.  I was lucky to have a stunning landscape to work with and the course blends perfectly with the forests and backdrop of the Beskydy Mountain Range.  The Signature 15th Hole, a Par 3, features an island green and was voted the Best Golf Hole in the Czech Republic.  I was very proud when the Prosper Golf Resort was chosen to stage the Czech Open, a European Tour tournament, for a period of three years from 2009-2011.

NACO GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB

Santo Domingo
Dominican Republic

I am currently designing an 18 Hole Par 72 golf course at the Naco Golf & Country Club, within an exclusive residential resort on the Caribbean island of Dominican Republic. With the Clubhouse and the first 9 holes already  built, I am now working on the design of the second 9 holes. The building of townhouses and villas around the course will begin in due course to create a luxury development.

DIAMOND COUNTRY CLUB

Atzenbrugg
Austria

In 2010 I was asked by Christian Guzy, owner of the Diamond Country Club, to redesign the existing 8th Hole of 448 yards which he felt needed some improvement.  This has since become the Signature Hole of the Course, and the Golf Club has hosted the Lyoness Open on the European Tour for the past four years.
